Genie GR-20 Service & Repair — Chicagoland | Win Win Equipment
Same-day diagnosis in Addison, IL · Vertical mast lift · GR-12 / GR-15 / GR-20 · Repairs $150/hr · Annual ANSI inspection $225
The Genie GR-20 is a vertical mast lift — the compact runabout that gets one person up to 25 feet in aisles a scissor lift can’t fit. It’s built on the same Genie SmartLink electrical system as the GS scissor line, so we service it the same way at our Addison, IL shop. We pick yours up and diagnose it the same day; straightforward fixes go back the next day, complex problems get an honest timeline before any work starts. Call 773-790-7299. This page also covers its GR-12 and GR-15 siblings.

GR-12 & GR-15 differences
Same chassis and 24V system, shorter mast and higher capacity: GR-12 reaches 17 ft 4 in (500 lb), GR-15 reaches 20 ft 8 in (500 lb). Everything on this page applies to all three — we service the full GR family.
Common GR-20 problems
Won’t lift or won’t do anything: e-stops at both stations, key switch position, then the batteries — a tired 24V pack drops functions before it dies. The GR-20’s mast is unforgiving about level: an off-level reading (LL) inhibits lift by design.
Lifts partway then stops: at full height the GR-20 leans on its tilt and pothole systems — an LL or PHS status code, or a height-sensor calibration fault, stops it on purpose. Move to firm level ground first, then read the display.
Won’t charge: read the charger LED — solid red is an internal charger fault (F-code); flashing amber is external (E-code — usually battery voltage, connections, or a mismatched charge profile). E-0-0-4 (defective battery) leads the pack.
GR-20 display codes — status vs. fault
SmartLink-equipped GR units show two kinds of codes at the ground controls. Status codes aren’t malfunctions — they’re the machine telling you why it’s holding: LL (off-level), OL (overload), PHS (pothole guard stuck), CH (chassis mode), CHrgr (charger connected, functions limited), ObS (obstruction alarm actuated).
Fault codes (DTCs) mean a detected electrical problem, in the same five families as the whole Genie SmartLink line — H (hydraulic-function circuits), P (power devices), U (switches and joystick), F (sensors and limit switches), C (control modules). Got a code on your GR-20? Call 773-790-7299 with the code and serial number — we read them every day on the GS scissors too. Charger F-codes and E-codes are covered on our battery service page.
GR-20 down or flashing a code? Same-day diagnosis.

Annual inspection & pricing
Vertical mast lifts need the same annual ANSI/OSHA inspection as any aerial platform — within 13 months of the last one. $225 in-shop, $350 on-site across Chicagoland, same-day certificate when pre-scheduled, renewal reminders included. Repairs run $150/hr plus parts, quoted after same-day diagnosis. If a repair crosses roughly half the machine’s value, we’ll say so and show you a refurbished GR-20 with a fresh inspection on it.
GR-20 service FAQ
What batteries does a Genie GR-20 take?
Four 6-volt T-105 batteries (225 Ah) in a 24V pack. We install Crown deep-cycle batteries to this spec — a US-built pack that outlasts the cheap imports.
Is the GR-20 a scissor lift?
No — it’s a vertical mast lift (a personnel runabout). But it shares the Genie SmartLink electrical system with the GS scissors, so the diagnostics, charger, and battery service are the same, and we handle all of it.
My GR-20 shows LL and won’t lift — is it broken?
Usually not. LL is a status code: the machine reads off-level. Move it to firm, flat ground. If LL persists on a level floor, the tilt sensor needs attention.
Do you service the GR-12 and GR-15 too?
Yes — same family, same electrical system, same shop. Plus the full Genie line: Genie scissor lift service.
Spec and code data: Genie GR Service Manual P/N 1275811GT (Rev B) and GR-12/15/20 spec sheet, for covered serial ranges. Trademarks belong to their owners; Win Win Equipment is an independent service shop.
